People Are Participating In A "Check Your Privilege" Challenge And It's A Big Reality Check For Some

"I hope people will use the privilege they have to help others."

There's a big trend on TikTok where people play the "put a finger down" game and share their wild, real-life experiences to shock others. So TikTok user @boss_bigmamma recently started a "check your privilege" edition of this challenge:

@boss_bigmamma

How many willing to do this? All races. Privilege isn’t all about money. #fyp #foryou #momsoftiktok #foryourpage #over40 #challenge #dontflop

@boss_bigmamma is a Virginia woman named Kenya who goes by Big Mamma — a nickname she got from her mom. She told BuzzFeed she made the video to share her personal experience and give others the opportunity to compare their own. "I know discrimination happens for many reasons, which is why I labeled it 'check your privilege' instead of 'white privilege,'" she explained. Here are the "put a finger down" experiences she outlines in her video:

– Put a finger down if you have been called a racial slur.

– Put a finger down if you've been followed in a store unnecessarily.

– Put a finger down if someone has crossed the street in order to avoid passing you.

– Put a finger down if you've had someone clench their purse in an elevator with you.

– Put a finger down if you've had someone step off of an elevator to keep from riding with you.

– Put a finger down if you've been accused of not being able to afford something expensive.

– Put a finger down if you've had fear in your heart when being stopped by the police.

– Put a finger down if you've never been given a pass on a citation you deserved.

– Put a finger down if you have been stopped or detained by police for no valid reason.

– Put a finger down if you have been bullied solely because of your race.

– Put a finger down if you've been denied service solely because of the color of your skin.

– Put a finger down if you've ever had to teach your children how not to get killed by the police.

White people started recording videos of themselves doing this challenge to show just how much white privilege exists:

And interracial couples also started partaking in the challenge:

Kenya said that some people related her challenge to race, while others related it to their socioeconomic status or their religion. "Whatever they took away from it, I hope people will use the privilege they have to help others. I can only hope that we create a better existence for our grandchildren. I want to do my part to be a part of that change," she said.

And it doesn't matter if you are in the public eye or not — because this is the sad reality we live in.

Kenya said it has been nice to see so many positive responses to people sharing her video. "It makes me feel like I have done just a small part in this bigger picture," she said.
