30 Things That'll Help Save You Money In The Long Run

Easy additions include no-dent hair ties, a dry shampoo for your clothes, highly effective moth catchers, and much more.

We hope you love the products we recommend! All of them were independently selected by our editors. Just so you know, BuzzFeed may collect a share of sales or other compensation from the links on this page if you decide to shop from them. Oh, and FYI — prices are accurate and items in stock as of time of publication.

    1. A soft coiled hair tie that won't leave a dent in your hair like OG elastics — which could save you a couple of washes/time. AND they're easier to track down, so they're less likely to disappear into the abyss like your other hair ties.

I'm legendary for misplacing oodles and oodles of hair ties and have come to swear by these in the past year for both being dent-less and easier to find!

Promising review: "I’m obsessed with these! I have thick curly hair so rubber bands and the ribbon elastics always dent my hair. Even when I straighten my hair, those type of hair ties also dent my hair. With these coils, my hair is secure whether it’s straight or curly. When I remove it, my hair is easily fixed back into place. These do stretch out after you use it for a while, but it is easily fixed. If you blow dry them, the heat will cause it to shrink back to its original size and it is as good as new!" —Stephanie S.

    Get a four-pack from Amazon for $5.99.

    2. A glam magnetic brooch with a loop to hold your glasses when you're not wearing them — meaning no holes in your nice shirts or MIA glasses that need replacing.

    3. An adjustable window screen that'll allow those fall breezes inside and give your A/C a break. AND it'll keep your pets inside and the bugs outside!

Promising review: "Adjustable, portable, and lightweight, this window screen is well made. You can paint the wood to match your window. Now I can have nice cool air circulating in the house during the fall and winter months in South Carolina." —Maria

Get it from Amazon for $9.21+ (available in 10 adjustable sizes).

    4. And if leaving your windows open/unlocked makes you nervous (I get it!), a motion sensor you can place on your partially opened window will act like your guard dog while ya' snooze. And if you upgrade this plan, you can save on homeowner's insurance!

This Kangaroo motion sensor is super sleek and detects when a window is move away from its setting (like your perfect amount of "open"). This sensor comes with a free plan that allows for unlimited user invitations and sends you push notifications alerts via the app. But if you upgrade to Kangaroo Complete, you’ll be eligible for up to 20% off your homeowners or renters insurance rate with select providers (check out the Amazon product listing for more info).

Get it from Amazon for $29.99.

    5. A pair of designer eyeglasses (Chloe, if you wanna get specific) you can have perfectly fit to your face shape/size from the comfort of your own home. No more guessing at how a pair of glasses will look on your heart-shaped face when trying to avoid talking to actual human people and making a huge financial mistake!!!

    Eyeconic, Elizabeth Lilly / BuzzFeed

Yup, this is me modeling those glasses with ~technology~. But it doesn't just give you a still picture, you record a video so you can see how the glasses look at allll angles. (OK, almost all angles.) All you have to do is allow the Eyeconic site access to your computer's camera and pose for a video/photo. So you can easily send the group chat a text like "How do these look?" without going to a store to try on anything! (But if you're in Chicago, there are two store locations where you can walk in and do this on an iPad, still without actually talking to a human.) When it comes time to buy them, you can use your insurance, FSA, and HSA. *Plus* they sell tons of sunglasses that have the option of adding prescription lenses.

Get them from Eyeconic for $381+ (available in non-prescription, single vision, and progressive).

    6. A door draft stopper the least handy person in the world could handle installing to prevent cold gusts from coming in. Don't make your heating system work harder than it has to! Bc $$$!,

Promising review: "So easy to set up! All you do is peel tape and adhere to a CLEAN and DRY door. Also looks great, I don't even notice it. I had a huge gap under my door. I could smell and hear everything from the hallway. Smells, drafts, and sound all are less of an issue now." —Brit B.

Get it from Amazon for $9.99 (available in four colors).

    7. A refreshing clothing spray to spritz on vintage finds or anything a lil' less than fresh-from-the-dryer if ya' get my drift. You'll save on utilities AND keep your clothes in working order for much longer. Aka, things that are good for the environment AND wallet.

Skipping washes (and even steaming your clothes instead when ya' can!) can help even the cheapest of clothing items hold together longer. If you care about sustainability, practices like these can be the key to hanging onto the cheapest of fast fashion pieces for much longer!

I've flipped through this book IRL and it'd make a gorgeous but INCREDIBLY useful coffee table book! If the thought of sewing repairs sound intimidating, fear not! The techniques are all based on basic techniques of exterior patches, interior patches, slow stitches, darning, and weaving.

Promising review: "First of all this is the most beautiful book I’ve seen in ages. Every page is as filled with detail as are the instructions themselves. This is a guidebook but even more an inspiration for building and maintaining a sustainable wardrobe one mend at a time. Great purchase and highly recommended even for non-sewers or wannabe sewers like myself." —Heather Blanchard

Get it from Amazon for $9.99+.

    9. While we're on the subject of taking better care of your apparel, some Heel Stoppers to help your stilettos from taking a grassy dive. Fewer repairs and environmental staining means you can wear those beauts for so much longer!

    Elizabeth Lilly / BuzzFeed

I slipped some of these onto ^ Blue by Betsey Johnson stilettos to wear with a bridesmaid dress at an outdoor wedding. And I didn't help the country club venue aerate their lawn during my walks to and from my designated point OR trip. Small victories! Note that these DO NOT make your shoes comfier (as I discovered) but they will be steadier to walk on as a nice lil' side effect!

Get them from Amazon for $12.99 (available in four sizes).

    10. A bottle of leather conditioner for reviving your leather goods as large as a leather couch!,

Reviewers note that using this may darken the leather, so keep that in mind!

Promising review: "Excellent product! So happy I tried it! I wore kitchen gloves and smoothed a thin layer of the product all over the couch, instead using of the cloth. Went way faster and I didn’t waste product soaked up by the cloth." —Kristie

I decided to give my nails a break and wanted to try and grow them out. I can't even believe the outcome! They are stronger than ever and growing! I really wish I had taken a before pic to show the difference!" —JOE D.

Get it from Amazon for $8.50+ (available in two sizes).

    12. A six-pack of moth traps you can park in all your closets because, tbh, moths are a problem year-round but you don't think about them 'til you crack open that coat closet post–Labor Day. Seriously, lay off my outerwear!

Promising review: "Had moths infesting my leather shop, so I put out about 4 of these traps and within the first week I had 3 of them so full that I ordered more. It has been about 6 weeks since the second order and I haven't seen a moth since.

I noticed that those clustered together worked better than the one off on its own; perhaps the pheromone compounds when clustered. Either way, the moths are dead and my leather inventory is safe." —1836

Get it from Amazon for $19.97.

    13. A wood scratch cover that'll hide all those dings and scrapes so you can keep your bedroom set instead of switching out your worse-for-wear dresser. At the very least, you'll have to avoid sanding and refinishing all kinds of things around the house!

Promising review: "I can't believe how well Old English works! I recently purchased a home where a dog previously lived and had horribly scratched the woodwork. I thought I may have to sand and refinish the woodwork around two doors. Old English saved me a lot of work! " —Behold Behold!

I used these in my house plants that are breeding fungus gnats like crazy. I used them in conjunction with beneficial nematodes, and they definitely cut down on the number of gnats in our house.
