I Tried 21 Cult-Favourite Beauty Products And Holy Cow, Are They Ever Great

I'm obsessed with all of them.

We hope you love the products we recommend! All of them were independently selected by our editors. Just so you know, BuzzFeed may collect a share of sales or other compensation from the links on this page if you decide to shop from them. Oh, and FYI — prices are accurate and items in stock as of time of publication.

    1. A Tower 28 lip jelly, if you're tired of the matte lip trend and prefer the look of a plumper, juicier pout. The formula is oil based, meaning you won't have to deal with the dreaded stickiness of a traditional gloss.

    Alice Prendergast / Via BuzzFeed

Until recently, I was not a gloss gal. In fact, I was not a lip product gal at all (besides balm). But let me tell you, things have changed! I am obsessed with these lip jellies. They keep my cracked, chapped lips soothed and the colours are great. I am not lying when I say I am going to purchase every single one because they are so dang pretty.

Get it from Sephora Canada for $18. Available in ten colours.

    2. A liquid eyeliner pen from Rare Beauty that'll help you achieve a cat eye that's sharp as a knife (thanks, Selena). It'll stay put all day long, so you won't have to worry about one wing magically vanishing while you're out and about.

    Alice Prendergast / Via BuzzFeed

I wear liquid eyeliner every single day (yes, even in quarantine), so I consider myself a connoisseur when it comes to this stuff. I find most liners fade or bleed throughout the day, but this one definitely does not. The felt tip makes it a cinch to apply, so you can achieve a wing in one easy swoop.

Get it from Sephora Canada for $25.

    3. A jar of cult-favourite Aztec Secret bentonite clay mask that will suck every last bit of gunk out of your pores in under 20 minutes (and make you look like a swamp monster). You can also use it as a spot treatment, if you don't want to cover your whole face.

    Alice Prendergast / Via BuzzFeed

This mask is made of bentonite clay and it sucks everything out of your pores – like, EVERYTHING. Using it is simple: you mix the powdery clay with equal parts water or apple cider vinegar (I like to do a combo of the two), and apply it to your face as you would any other face mask. When this stuff starts to dry you are in for an experience. It freezes your face in place and tightens up every pore, and makes you seriously look like a lizard queen (see above photo for reference). I’ll be honest with you, the feeling is not that pleasant, but hold on – the end result is worth it. You can also just do spot treatments if you don't want to cover your whole face. Check out our full review of the Aztec Secret mask to see before and after pics.

Get it on Amazon Canada for $19.95. Also available in a larger size.

    4. A bottle of The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% solution that'll help banish annoying breakouts and balance your skin. If pimples tend to pop up around your period, consider this your knight in shining armour.

    Alice Prendergast / Via BuzzFeed

I thought I'd gotten rid of my hormonal acne but hahaha jokes on me, it's reared it's ugly head again in 2020 (honestly, very appropriate for this year). This solution balances sebum and clears congested pores, leaving my skin with not but one zit, even when Aunt Flow rolls into town. It also takes, like, five seconds to sink in, so I can happily continue on with my skincare routine right after applying it.

Get it from Sephora Canada for $5.90.

    5. This Marc Jacobs perfume that'll make you smell like a bouquet of flowers, but not like a grandma. The blend of daffodil, rhubarb, cedarwood, and cashmeran makes for a super-tasty scent that's warmer than your typical floral perfumes.

I normally loathe floral scents, but this is one I can actually get behind. It's not sickly sweet and doesn't make you smell like you spent the night sleeping in a flower bed. It's a lot warmer and less fruity, which makes it a solid alternative to my woodsy, musky faves when I want to switch things up.

Get it from Sephora Canada for $115. Also available in a larger size and in a travel size.

    6. This Amika waving wand that'll give you tousled, beachy waves without even getting in the water. It also delivers major volume, meaning even the finest hair won't fall flat.

    Alice Prendergast / Via BuzzFeed

I have very fine, flat hair and this baby amps up the volume and leaves me with waves that last all day. It's not the most intuitive tool to wield, but once you get the hang of it, it's actually pretty fun and easy to use.

Get it from Sephora Canada for $165.

    7. This Anastasia Beverly Hills palette that has every warm, neutral tone you could ever dream of needing. It has a mix of mattes and sparkles, and comes with a dual-ended brush that conveniently fits into the case.

    Alice Prendergast / Via BuzzFeed

If there's one thing I like to spend my money on it's luxury eye shadow palettes. I own three from Anastasia Beverly Hills and this is my absolute favourite (though the Soft Glam palette is a close second). The shadows are ultra buttery and don't fade throughout the day or get patchy. I honestly never thought I'd be into wearing pink shades on my eyes, but this has totally turned that around for me.

Get it from Sephora Canada for $60.

    8. A pack of gold under-eye patches that are packed with rose oil, hyaluronic acid, and vitamin C to soothe and moisturize skin. They have a cooling effect, so they may help wake you up on an early morning (or after a hangover).

    Alice Prendergast / Via BuzzFeed

I am never not tired, so I am a sucker for any product that helps wake me. These are a great alternative to holding cold spoons under your eyes and are a treat for your skin. When I peel off them off, my under-eye area feels moisturized and plump, and there's enough product left to massage around my entire face, so the rest of my mug gets a healthy dose of hydration, too. They actually stay in place pretty well, so I don't have to be fully horizontal for twenty minutes while they work their magic.

Get a pack of 12 on Amazon Canada for $16.99.

    9. A bottle of Verb Ghost Oil that's infused with bamboo extract, moringa seed oil, and argan oil to strengthen your locks and minimize frizz. It's thicker than most hair serums, and delivers some serious hydrating results with just a few pumps.

    Alice Prendergast / Via BuzzFeed

When I bleached my hair, it was completely busted. It broke every time I brushed it and basically looked like one of those tumbleweeds you see in an old western movie every time I blowdried it — until I found this. It's thicker than most oils (a bit lighter than the consistency of gel) and combs through hair like a dream. It packs in moisture like nobody's business and also smells freaking amazing.

Get it from Sephora Canada for $20.

    10. A dual-ended tube of e.l.f lash and brow gel that'll help you achieve a no-makeup makeup look in seconds. It's not sticky at all, but will lift your brow hairs and lashes to the high heavens and keep them there all day long.

    Alice Prendergast / Via BuzzFeed

This is my favourite quick-fix product for when I want to feel a little bit more put together, but don't want to go all out with my 52-step beauty routine. It also doesn't leave my hairs feeling crispy or flake off after a few hours of wear.

Get it on Amazon Canada for $2.97.

    11. This weightless foundation from Rare Beauty that has the texture of a serum, that'll actually let your skin breathe. It has an oversized doe-foot applicator that'll save you from over applying and wasting precious drops of product.

    Alice Prendergast / Via BuzzFeed

I do not have perfect skin, so I love a good foundation. This one is super lightweight and feels more like skincare than it does makeup. It has a serum-like texture that glides on and doesn't dry before I have time to blend it out. It's also super buildable, so I can go for light coverage on a good skin day or heavy coverage when my pores look like angry volcanos.

Get it from Sephora Canada for $38. Available in 28 shades.

    12. A tube of Tarte's iconic Lights, Camera, Splashes mascara that'll see you through the harshest of storms, without budging or smudging. It'll also add curl and length to your lashes, which is perfect if you love a lil' bit of drama.

    Alice Prendergast / Via BuzzFeed

I've literally gone swimming with this stuff on and it hasn't flaked away.

Get it from Sephora Canada for $30.

    13. This Tower 28 lip and cheek tint that's creamy, dreamy, and downright gorgeous. It's formulated with aloe vera extract, so it'll actually hydrate your skin, instead of leaving it looking cake-y.

    Alice Prendergast / Via BuzzFeed

I find powder blushes extremely hard to work with, so creamy alternatives like this one are an absolute blessing in my books. This one looks super intimidating in the pan, but once you blend it out, it looks surprisingly natural. I love that you can also use it on your lips as a tint, so I don't have to pack my makeup bag with a ton of different products. It has a balmy texture, so it doesn't dry out my pout, either.

Get it from Sephora Canada for $26. Available in three colours.

    14. This hydrating moisturizer from The Ordinary that's scent free and won't irritate your sensitive skin. It's packed with dermal lipids, hyaluronic acids, and amino acids that'll quench even the most parched skin, without leaving it feeling greasy.

    Alice Prendergast / Via BuzzFeed

I used to spend a fortune on moisturizers (like somewhere in the $50-$70 range), but this budget-friendly baby is as good as any luxury alternative I've tried. It's scent free, which is a necessity for me, and doesn't leave my skin feeling congested. It also sinks in fast enough that I can start doing my makeup almost immediately.

Get it from Sephora Canada for $5.80. Also available in a larger size.

    15. This budget-friendly nail cream that'll make your talons longer and stronger than ever before. It can also be used to moisturize your hands and dry, calloused feet, if that's something you struggle with.

    Alice Prendergast / Via BuzzFeed

I bought this because the winter got the best of my nails, leaving me with hangnails galore. I actually saw results after one use, and now my nails are tough enough to not break every time I crack open my laptop and start typing (an actual problem I was having).

Get it on Amazon Canada for $14.99. Also available in a larger size.

    16. A bottle of balancing Ole Henriksen toner that'll give you a fresh face without stripping your skin or leaving it feeling tight. I react to most toners, but this one keeps my pores happy and my face zit free.

    Alice Prendergast / Via BuzzFeed

I used to have a real love/hate relationship with toners, but when I stumbled upon this gem, a moved fully into the 'love' camp. It does exactly what it claims to do: control oil. Even around my time of the month (which is when it tends to be at its worst), my skin stays pretty balanced. Other pluses? It doesn't have that alcohol-y smell like a lot of toners do and feels a little more moisturizing. My skin also doesn't have that uncomfortable tight feeling after I use it either, which is great.

Get it on Sephora Canada for $38.

    17. A tub of Biossance rose lip balm that's packed with hyaluronic acid to give your dry lips a healthy dose of moisture. The formula also includes wakame algae, which will naturally plump up your lips, without that weird tingly sensation.

    Alice Prendergast / Via BuzzFeed

This is my favourite lip balm, like, ever. Unlike the drugstore alternatives I've tried, it actually has lasting results. I don't have to reapply it every ten minutes and I slather my lips in it before bed as a makeshift lip mask.

Get it from Sephora Canada for $24.

    18. A travel-sized pack of Cetaphil cleansing cloths formulated for sensitive skin. They won't leave any pore-clogging residue behind, so they're great for using on the go. You can even use them to wipe down your dirty hands, if you're in a pinch and there's not a sink in sight.

    Alice Prendergast / Via BuzzFeed

I keep this tiny pack of facial wipes in my bag at all times, in case I spend the night at a friend's house on a whim. They get rid of every speck of makeup, and don't leave feeling parched or cause breakouts (which is pretty much all I look for in a cleansing wipe). They also don't smell like anything, which is a major plus in my book, because I loathe the ideas of putting synthetic fragrances anywhere near my face.

Get a pack of 10 wipes on Amazon Canada for $4.79. Also available in a pack of 25 wipes.

    19. This liquid blush from Rare Beauty that's, like, stupid pigmented, so you'll only need the tiniest bit to pack a punch. It's super creamy and blends like a dream, too.

A person holding the blush with two swatches on their arm
    Alice Prendergast / Via BuzzFeed

As I mentioned before, I am a sucker for a good cream blush. This one is absolutely no joke. It's the most pigmented product I've ever worked with and I only need a tiny dot of it to do both of my cheeks. Luckily, it doesn't dry on the spot, so I have time to work it in with a beauty sponge or brush before it sets.

Get it from Sephora Canada for $26. Available in two finishes and eight colours.

    20. This Becca foundation with a medium-coverage, natural finish that'll even out your skin tone without making you look like a mannequin. It's formulated to moisturize your skin, too, so it's great for dry fall/winter days.

A person holding the foundation in front of a book
    Alice Prendergast / Via BuzzFeed

I really love that this foundation is suitable for all skin types, because my skin likes to switch things up as the seasons change. It's pretty moisturizing, so it's especially great for the winter months. If you have oilier skin, you may want to wear a setting powder on top to keep it in place, but I don't find that step necessary for my own routine (your girl prefers a dewier finish).

Get it from Sephora Canada for $27. Available in 24 shades.

    21. And finally, this NYX brow pencil that'll fill in your sparse brows, making them look fuller and fluffier than ever. It has a spoolie on the opposite end, so you can blend out any harsh lines.

    Alice Prendergast / Via Buzzfeed

I have dark but sparse brows, so filling them in is pretty much necessary. I love how fine the tip on this crayon is because it actually allows me to draw in little hairs, instead of colouring my brows in like blocks. The spoolie is also great for brushing away mistakes and harsh lines when I've gone in too heavy handedly.

Get it on Amazon Canada for $12. Available in seven shades.
